Once again the new Ford F-150 finds itself under attack from another popular ½ ton pickup. Last time it was the 2017 Silverado, but now the RAM 1500 wants a crack at the leader. So let’s not waste any more time and get straight to it – which one of these hyper-popular trucks will end up on top?
Engines & Power
In terms of power, the F-150 finds itself at an advantage with more engine options (4 to the RAM’s 3). However, the RAM does have a 3.0L turbo-diesel engine for max torque and fuel economy whereas the F-150’s diesel engine is still on the horizon. We’ll call it a tie as the Ford’s gasoline engines are superior to the RAM’s, but the goat-horned aggressor currently has the only diesel engine in the mix.
Towing Capacity
Frankly this category is no contest at all. While the RAM is no slouch with a maximum tow rating of 10,640 lbs and 1,880 lbs payload, the Ford blows it out of the water with 13,200 lbs of towing muscle and 3,270 lbs payload. The Ford also offers technology like Pro Trailer Backup Assist which makes hooking up a trailer a cinch.
Technology & Luxury
Looking at the luxury aspect, the Ford again finds itself at a distinct advantage, having just been refreshed for 2018. The RAM on the other hand, hasn’t seen a major update since 2013 and lags behind in several departments. The F-150 simply offers a more luxurious interior with more standout features like a WiFi hotspot, remote tailgate release, Adaptive Cruise Control, and much more.
Safety & Security
While safety admittedly isn’t the first thing most truck buyers think of, nevertheless it’s nice to know it’s there. The F-150 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick thanks to features like Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection and a Lane-Keeping System. Meanwhile, the RAM 1500 lacks any of these systems and put up rather weak scoring in the IIHS’ crash tests.
In the end the 2018 Ford F-150 stands on top thanks to its blend of technology, safety, and towing capacity. While the RAM 1500 certainly has a brutish charm about it, ultimately it badly needs a refresh if it’s to properly compete in this cutthroat category.
